By 2056, Sydney’s Anglican Diocese will need to shift its resources from the city’s east to new suburbs in the west, and to churches such as Pastor Stuart Starr’s in Oran Park.

Australian churches face a similar challenge. Those identifying as Christian fell by almost 20 per cent in the decade to 2021, and now sits at 44 per cent. In NSW, just 1 per cent of people living within the Sydney Anglican Diocese regularly attends its churches.Still, religious affiliation might not have too much further to fall.

Some areas will need to lose churches, but others, such as the outer south-west, will need more. It has 44 now, but will need another 20 within 20 years. The strategy looks at which parishes will get bigger, and which might need to merge with others. It focuses on the south-west; other regions will follow. It predicts that in 2056, the region’s biggest parish will be Camden Valley, with 2615 practicing Anglicans.

As Anglicans begin discussing the thorny issue of what buildings it can sacrifice – a decision required for the greater good, but ultimately made at local level – Holy Trinity at Beacon Hill, near Dee Why on the northern beaches, has become a template.
