The pub was popular with locals and those travelling abroad
A forgotten pub with an airport themed disco was later demolished. The enormous Dove and Olive pub was situated on Hale Road, where it meets Dungeon Lane, in Speke . As well as a bar, 'The Dovey' had a large lounge complete with a dance floor, and remained popular with private parties up until its closure. According to one advert posted in the ECHO in 1982, the Dove and Olive had a 'Terminal One' disco due to its close proximity to the original Liverpool Airport site.
Before Speke was built, the land it now occupies was a small village with a population of 400 people surrounded by farmland. The land was bought by Liverpool Corporation in 1928, who then began building homes in earnest in the interwar period to house workers employed in the factories in the nearby industrial estate. After World War II , families began flocking to Speke to work in the new factories, and by the end of the 1950s, more than 25,000 people were living in the area.
