Gerard McMahon, who's been working the waters for over 30 years, believes it's 'game over' for Lough Neagh
A fisherman left jobless and now sick by toxic blue-green algae believes its ‘game over’ for the UK and Ireland’s biggest freshwater lake.
The Lough Neagh Partnership board member had been fishing its waters for over 30 years but says he hasn’t earned a penny since June because there’s nothing to catch.“The fishing season opens on May 1 and usually, we would fish until Halloween. This year I had to pull the pin in early June. “It was like a fluey type feeling and that went on all night and I never got a wink of sleep. I’m as weak as water and that last time I was sick, I was at school.
Anna O’Neill, who lives on the banks of the Bann between Portglenone and Bellaghy says her husband and his pal fell ill after fishing in the river.“My husband really wasn’t well about two weeks ago after they’d been fishing.“My husband was fishing at Toome and the water was solid green. Thankfully she says her horses hadn’t been drinking it as they were outside, but Anna says she is concerned as the water had come from their tap.
