The British heavyweight never fully drops his guard, but there are glimpses of a man grappling with exactly what to do next
Louis Theroux Interviews… is back, with episode one of its second series featuring two-time world champion boxer Anthony Joshua So there’s something a little underwhelming about seeing him in a more conventional, Q&A interview format where he just sits down and talks to someone.series two was an enjoyable hour of television, it couldn’t claim to reveal much that is new, noteworthy or groundbreaking about one of boxing’s biggest stars.
On Theroux’s end, all the right questions were asked and followed up, and “AJ” was given ample time to say his piecewhich he clearly appreciated, telling the filmmaker that his annoyance at “all the bullshit that comes with ” is because other people “don’t ask me like you, they don’t sit down and have a conversation”.But save for a few notable moments where we get a glimpse of vulnerability, of a conflicted man, the boxer’s guard stays up, and I was left wishing we could find out more.
When he was chatting about everything from his troubled early days and the inevitable health risks that come with the fighter’s occupation of choice, to his seven-year-old son, dating life and family values, Joshua seemed relatively at ease – a credit to Theroux’s disarming presence, as well as the fact that the pair clearly got on.
