The former BBC presenter reveals she's been harassed and propositioned, but only in her 40s felt empowered to speak up

The former BBC presenter reveals she's been harassed and propositioned, but only in her 40s felt empowered to speak upto know when someone’s behaviour is inappropriate, offensive and unacceptable. But the truth is that even in the supposedly enlightened age of 2024, it helps if you are a “middle-class woman of a certain age” to feel empowered enough to call it out.

I will also never forget the former TV agent who said, in all seriousness, that he would only take me on as a client if I would agree to have sex with someone to get a job. I think from the way he said it, he meant himself in the first instance. My shocked negative reply meant we never worked together, and I am glad to say, he didn’t continue working as an agent for much longer.

I was at a black-tie awards ceremony in a smart hotel in London. I had been handing out awards all night to the winners and was making my way back to my room when two of the guests asked me for a selfie. Disgusted, I retreated as fast as I could to the safety of my room where I reflected on what happened and thought about what, if anything I should do about it.

It was one of the most awkward conversations I have ever had, approaching the event organiser and describing what had happened. When I recounted the incident, they asked me if I would recognise the man in question. I said I thought I would, and they pointed to someone who was lining up at the breakfast buffet bar, asking, was that him? It was indeed. As I suspected, he clearly had form for this type of behaviour.
