Also starting life terms in prison are murderous couple Michael Hillier and Rachel Fulstow
It has been a historic week for Manchester’s courts as killer nurse Lucy Letby was ordered to spend the rest of her life in prison.
She forced air into the bodies of the babies, on two occasions poisoning babies with insulin, and also physically attacked some of the babies. Billy Kelly, 38, stabbed his victim in the neck after showing up outside his home in Eliza Street, Hulme, in the early hours of the morning. The pair had been embroiled in a feud around the time that Kelly, a dad-of-two, carried out the brutal 'revenge' attack.
At the same court, Judge Maurice Greene told Hillier and Fulstow they acted as 'judge, jury and executioner' after they decided to 'exact vengeance'. He added that they 'showed no remorse' following the murder. Both were handed life sentences, with Hillier ordered to serve a minimum of 33 years behind bars and Fulstow a minimum of 30.
Following the murder, the couple enacted an elaborate plan to avoid justice that involved false alibis and a burnt out car. Days later, after the killing, they went on a two-week trip to Jamaica. But when they returned home, the net began to close and both were eventually arrested. McDonnell used the 72-year-old’s walking stick to hit him repeatedly, before running away with his shopping, his wallet and the takeaway food.
