Luis Campusano has already caught more games than any of his previous MLB seasons
That Luis Campusano was on the field at Angel Stadium taking early batting practice about five hours before Tuesday’s game was not unusual. He is most often among the first players at a ballpark. There is a lot to do as a catcher, getting in the work that is for himself before devoting so much of his day to others. Before the meetings with coaches and pitchers to go over that night’s plan of attack, he works to take care of his body.
“You don’t think about it when you’re playing, because you're just in the moment just trying to win and help the team,” he said. “But afterwards, it's like, ‘Dang, man, my body is pretty banged up.’ It's just like constant work, which I love too.” Padres game strategy assistant Brian Esposito, who serves as catching coach, has taken the lead in Campusano’s development since joining the staff last season.
