Colombian President Gustavo Petro said Colombia's National Liberation Army (ELN) kidnapping of father of Liverpool soccer star Luis Diaz attempted against the country's peace process on Friday after failure to release him.
Nine days have passed since the parents of Liverpool footballer Luis Diaz were kidnapped by the Colombian Guerilla group ELN.
It came after the Liverpool star broke his silence about his dad's kidnap with an emotional social media message begging the group to release him promptly. Diaz's father, Luis Manuel Diaz and his mother, Cilenis Marulanda, were seized at gunpoint in their hometown of Barrancas near the Venezuelan border on October 28
It seeks to control critical areas of the country—particularly those associated with drug trafficking—and frequently engages in armed confrontations with Colombian authorities. The Colombian military decimated the ELN in 1973, however, the group was able to rebuild from just 65 members. But after Colombia's former president Ivan Duque took office in 2018, relations once again began to break down.
