17-year-old Luke Littler wins the World Darts Championships, defeating Michael van Gerwen and securing the Sid Waddell trophy and £500k prize money. The article details his journey, unconventional pre-match rituals, and future plans.
With the Sid Waddell trophy and £500k prize money in the bank, the world is Luke Littler 's oyster after his World Darts Championships victory over Michael van Gerwen. The 17-year-old Warrington sensation came back to the Alexandra Palace tournament in which he announced himself to the world 12 months ago and emphatically cruised to victory. Up against three-time winner Van Gerwen, he calmly dispatched 'The Green Machine' 7-3 in last Friday's meeting.
Celebrations at Ally Pally saw Littler get his hands on the Sid Waddell trophy plus the Ballon d'Art trophy awarded for the most 180s hit across the event. There were also heart-warming scenes as he celebrated with family and friends who had come in support. And according to The Mirror, it continued into Saturday. There were no raucous scenes hitting the town at all as remember, he is still under the UK's legal drinking age. Instead, after the star boy took part in breakfast news and TV interviews before the Littler family went for a low-key lunch together. Throughout the tournament the teen had two unconventional pre-match 'rituals' that reportedly got his rivals' backs up at Ally Pally. They were eating sweets and playing FIFA when the norm would be to get in some practice throws ahead of matches. Their effectiveness cannot be argued, as it helped him bag the top prize in the end. Part of that, of course, was the £500k jackpot. That figure will apparently be worth only half the total according to some reports suggesting over £230k of his earnings will be owed to the taxman and national insurance contributions. But what what would the boy wonder of darts spend the rest of his winnings on? I've always loved a Mercedes A-Class - just a small car,' he confirmed via The Mirro
