The major Manchester roadworks at Simister Island Junction 18 are expected to take several years to complete, with the project due to finish in 2030Need to know: Major m60 motorway upgrade begins at Simister Island junctionThe £255m-£296m scheme will create five lanes of traffic and a new link road at Junction 18.
Safety measures including temporary barriers, average speed cameras and new road markings have been installed following overnight closures this week. The National Highways website said: "These measures are essential to ensuring the safety of our workforce and customers, and are aimed at also minimising disruption on the motorway during busier periods.
" The project will see a 'northern loop' built to bypass the current traffic light controlled roundabout. Five-lane sections will be added on both sides of the M60 between Prestwich and Simister, with the M66 also being widened. The upgrade is expected to take until 2030 to complete and will boost the Atom Valley project. The new junction will help unlock development expected to generate more than 20,000 jobs and bring a £1bn economic boost to Rochdale and Bury.
