Catarina Macario won’t be available to compete for the USWNT in the World Cup this summer, she announced on Tuesday. The 23-year-old said she won’t be “physically ready” after tearing her ACL last June.
Macario was always fully aware of the dwindling amount of time she had to make it back on a field ahead of the USWNT final roster selection, but in April, she toldshe was also prioritizing her health long-term over risking a late push for the World Cup. That said, she didn’t hide her desire. “The World Cup is literally my home screen — the World Cup trophy. That’s what I want. I just have to be patient. I know I have a long career ahead of me,” she said.
By letting go of this tournament, there’s the silver lining of relaxing the timeline for recovery and return. With a potential move to Chelsea on the horizon, she can fully focus on what comes next and using club play to make her return to the USWNT later this year.The USWNT has already had to adapt to Macario’s extended absence, so as of right now there’s likely no changes to the plans for July and August.
