Axel Rudakubana, 18, who murdered three young girls at a Taylor Swift themed dance party in Southport, was found to have a range of disturbing items in his home, including a machete, equipment for producing ricin, and a copy of the Al-Qaeda training manual.
Books detailing genocide, war, and mass murder, alongside a machete and scientific equipment used to produce ricin, were discovered at the residence of Southport murderer Axel Rudakubana . The 18-year-old, from Banks in West Lancashire, perpetrated a horrific attack at a Taylor Swift themed dance party, claiming the lives of three young girls: Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine; Bebe King, six; and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven. The tragedy occurred on July 29 last year.
Rudakubana was scheduled to stand trial at Liverpool Crown Court this week, facing 16 charges, including three counts of murder. However, on Monday, January 20, Rudakubana's counsel, Stanley Reiz KC, informed presiding judge Mr Justice Goose that the indictment would require revision as the teenager intended to plead guilty to all charges. At the time of the attack, Rudakubana was 17 years old. He confessed to the three murders, as well as the attempted murders of eight other children (who remain unidentified for legal reasons), and two adults: Leanne Lucas, a class instructor, and John Hayes, a businessman, both of whom were also stabbed during the incident. He admitted to 10 counts of attempted murder, possession of a bladed article in a public place, production of a biological toxin (ricin), and possession of information potentially useful to someone planning or carrying out an act of terrorism, specifically a PDF file titled 'Military Studies in the Jihad Against the Tyrants: The Al-Qaeda Training Manual'. Described by a senior Crown Prosecution Service solicitor as a 'young man with a sickening and sustained interest in death and violence', Rudakubana carried out one of the most brutal attacks Merseyside has ever witnessed. Entering a children's dance party armed with a knife, Rudakubana, who had taken a taxi to the Hart Space on Hart Street, moved 'systematically through the room', stabbing children who attempted to flee. Brave adults, including Ms Lucas and Mr Hayes, rushed to help. Police officers apprehended him shortly after midday and he was subsequently charged. Further charges related to the production of the deadly toxin ricin and possession of the Al-Qaeda training manual were added in October of last year after police completed their search of his house. The Liverpool Echo has now revealed the full inventory of items discovered at Rudakubana's residence: a three-bedroom modern home situated in a quiet cul-de-sac. The search for items commenced approximately an hour after his arrest but was temporarily suspended the following day when a container containing an unidentified substance was found under his bed. Examination confirmed it to be ricin. This deadly toxin, capable of causing death if inhaled or injected and lacking an antidote, is believed to have never been deployed during the mass stabbing or at any other time. During the search, officers seized a machete, a Cerbera knife (identical to the one used in the attack), and arrows. An empty bag from Premier Seeds Direct, purportedly containing 150 seeds, was also discovered, along with a receipt indicating the purchase of castor beans (from which ricin is extracted) on January 19, 2022, under the name 'Al Rud'. Concealed beneath the floorboards in a cardboard box were a pair of goggles, two white funnels, a conical flask containing brown residue, and a pestle and mortar filled with pulp. All these items had been purchased from Amazon in 2022. In the family's living room, where Rudakubana appeared to have been sleeping, a duvet was found containing the Cerbera knife. Two Lenovo tablets and an HP laptop were also recovered. While the browsing history on these devices had been deleted, police managed to recover some information. One tablet, in use since 2021, contained various VPNs, used for encrypted communication and masking his IP address when he purchased the castor beans. Cached images related to wars and international conflicts, including those in Ukraine, Gaza, and Korea, were also found. The PDF file titled 'Military Studies in the Jihad Against the Tyrants: The Al-Qaeda Training Manual' was located on the same tablet, alongside instructions on how to execute knife attacks. The manual was downloaded at least twice in 2021, indicating he possessed it when purchasing the castor beans. The second Lenovo tablet was purchased in October 2023. Documents found on this tablet covered a wide range of violent conflicts, including the history of Nazi Germany, violence surrounding Buddhism in Sri Lanka, clan cleansing in Somalia, the Rwandan genocide, conflicts in Iraq and the Balkans, victims of torture, accounts of beheadings, and cartoons depicting violence. Some of the titles found in his possession included 'A Place Under Heaven - Amerindian Torture and Cultural Violence', 'The Mau Mau War: British Counterinsurgency in Colonial Kenya', 'Death and Survival During the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda', and 'Examination of Punishments Dealt to Slave Rebels in Two 18th Century British Plantation Societies'.
