His affinity to Macron is beyond dispute – as is the support of MoDem’s 36 deputies. The question in Paris, however, is whether the 73-year-old, whose main governmental experience is four years as education minister in the mid-90s, can resolve the Macron attempted to secure a working majority by naming conservative Michel Barnier as prime minister in September, with the tacit backing of the far right. “Everyone knows the difficulty of the task and everyone also knows that there is a path forward to be found that unites people instead of dividing them,” Bayrou said before heading for the prime minister’s residence at the Hôtel Matignon.
