James Maddison sent a message to goalkeeper Brandon Austin on social media after his first start for Tottenham against Newcastle. Spurs suffered a defeat on Saturday (4 January), with goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon overturning Dominic Solanke’s opener for the home side. Maddison, who started on the bench, came on with 28 minutes remaining but was unable to help Spurs find an equaliser. Despite the result, the English midfielder was quick to congratulate Austin.
He was handed a rare start due to injuries to first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and back-up Fraser Forster. Fans have also been vocal in their criticism, both for his performances on the pitch and his actions off it. After being spotted at the World Darts Championship, As for Austin, it seems unlikely he’ll see much more game time, despite winning Player of the Match against the Magpies. The club seems keen to avoid another managerial merry-go-round, even with just one Premier League win in their last eight matches. While this season has been largely forgettable for Spurs, it could take a positive turn if they beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final. Maddison has featured in two League Cup fixtures but is yet to register a goal or assist. Contributing against Arne Slot’s side on 8 January would be the perfect moment for him to step up
