Keys, 29, first reached the semi-finals in Melbourne as a 19-year-old, and the final of the US Open at 21, but had previously seemed unable to deliver the grand slam glory she promised as a teenage phenomenon.Sabalenka was chasing a different slice of history, hoping to become the fifth woman to win three Australian Open titles in a row, but her 20-match unbeaten streak came crashing down in a flurry of double-faults and unforced errors.
It was not a straightforward path to the final for Keys, the first woman since 2009 to beat the No 1 and No 2 seed en route to a major title.as well as Elina Svitolina and Danielle Collins as part of a 12-match winning streak that started on 7 January: she won the Adelaide title before arriving in Melbourne the day before the Open started.
“It’s okay, I hope I will see you next year!” Sabalenka joked to the trophy which already bears her name twice.“Even though I didn’t get it this year, I’ll come back stronger, and I’ll do my best next year.” Sabalenka initially looked as though trying to join such a prestigious list was weighing heavy on her shoulders, hitting two double-faults in the opening game of the match and another one in the fifth to drop the opening set in just 35 minutes.
