Mae Martin is an addict. At the age of six, she was addicted to Bette Midler. It was a curious, grand, important feeling and one she knew she must indulge alone, in her room after dinner. At 11, after she was invited up on stage to pretend to be a ventriloquist’s dummy, and there felt the full force of an audience’s laughter, Martin became addicted to standup comedy, leaving school three years later to perform full-time.
