A 5.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Isabela province on Sunday afternoon, April 23, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology .
In its earthquake bulletin, Phivolcs said the quake struck 55 kilometers northeast of Maconacon town, Isabela province around 5:19 p.m. Phivolcs’ instruments recorded the tremor at Intensity V in Peñablanca, Cagayan; Intensity IV in Gonzaga, Cagayan; Intensity III in Ilagan, Isabela; Intensity II in Casiguran in Aurora, Batac, Pasuquin and Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, Santiago City in Isabela, Tabuk in Kalinga, and Madella in Quirino; and Intensity I in Bangued in Abra, Baler and Diapaculao in Aurora, Vigan City and Sinait in Ilocos Sur, and Bayombong in Nueva Vizcaya.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.It noted that the earthquake may not have caused damage to houses, buildings, and other infrastructure, but advised the public to remain vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
