Defender Harry Maguire is adamant head coach Ruben Amorim will turn Manchester United's fortunes around, insisting 'he knows exactly what to do'. Amorim oversaw a fifth defeat from his opening 10 games in charge on Boxing Day, watching United slump to a 2-0 loss to Wolves at Molineux, leaving the club 14th in the table.
The defeat in the Black Country marked a third on the spin in all competitions for United, highlighting the size of the challenge Amorim faces in his attempts to turn United's fortunes around. Despite results not going the way Amorim would have hoped for thus far, he has made progress with his attempt to install a new identity - a mission he made his priority in his first interview as United head coach. His 3-4-3 system resembles a huge shift from the 4-3-3 shape United were wedded to under former manager Erik ten Hag. And the contrast in styles, according to Maguire, is what is making this transitional period so testing, particularly when time on the training ground has been limited because of the hectic nature of United's fixture schedule in recent weeks. 'The thing is with the managers and the styles, it is not like they have come in and they have similar styles,' Maguire told Sky Sports. 'They are the total opposite in terms of what they want and what they demand. 'So the transition period is going to be tough. We all have great belief in the manager and all his coaching staff. I am sure things are going to turn around. He knows exactly what he needs to do to get this club back. He has come in and done everything he needs to do. He is really demanding.' Heading into Sunday's fixtures, United are 12 points shy of the coveted Champions League qualification places and eight points above the drop zone.
