Angouleme Way in Bury will be closed overnight for up to 32 weeks to allow for the installation of new canopies at Bury Outdoor Market. The closures will take place from 7pm to 6am on select evenings starting February 23rd.

A main road through the centre of Bury will be closed to traffic on certain evenings for up to 32 weeks. Bury Council has said Angouleme Way will be subject to evening and overnight closures, starting on Sunday, February 23. The disruption for motorists is for work to bring major improvements to Bury Market. The eastbound carriageway, from Murray Road to Spring Street, will be closed to traffic from 7pm to 6am on certain evenings.

Overnight closures in February will be on 23, 24, 25 and 27 February. Diversion routes will be clearly signed, and alternative routes will be via Angouleme Way (westbound), Jubilee Way, Peel Way, Derby Way and Rochdale Road, via Market Street, Wellington Road, Parkhills Road, Heywood Street and Rochdale Road or via Market Street, Parkhills Road and Manchester Road. Motorists travelling between these times and on these dates are advised to allow more time for their journey. The reason for the temporary overnight road closures is to allow new canopies to be delivered and lifted by crane onto Bury Outdoor Market, starting with the steel frames and then the timber undersides of the canopies. The council said any disruption will be minimised as all closures will be outside the busiest travelling times and won’t be on market days. Closures will also be weather dependent as the heavy lifting required cannot go ahead during windy weather. Coun Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for culture and the economy, said: “While the temporary road closures may cause some short-term inconvenience to motorists, they do signal another positive step forward in progressing the £33 million regeneration scheme to futureproof our historic market that dates back to the 15th century. “Every year, many thousands of local people and visitors enjoy visiting Bury Market which is such an integral part of the town centre. Please bear with us while we make progress with these improvements, the market will be open as usual throughout all the works. Let’s continue to show the traders our support.” As well as enhancements to the outdoor market to make it more attractive and visible, the scheme will bring a new flexi (multi-purpose) hall and enhanced public spaces around the market. Works will be ongoing to summer 2026 when the scheme is anticipated to be completed
