“Major scientific breakthrough' announced by US scientists in search for near-limitless clean source of energy from fusion reactions
The technology could be a potential source of near-limitless clean energy as the elements needed to fuel the reaction can be found in sea water.
Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California said for the first time they had managed to produce more energy in a fusion reaction than was used to ignite it, something called net energy gain.Ms Granholm was appearing alongside Livermore researchers at a news conference in Washington.
Nuclear fusion produces huge amounts of energy, and only small amounts of short-lived radioactive waste. Scientists have long understood how nuclear fusion has worked and have been trying to duplicate the process on Earth as far back as the 1930s. The Livermore lab uses a different technique, with researchers firing a 192-beam laser at a small capsule filled with deuterium-tritium fuel.
