It's been a turbulent week for Manchester United Women but the arrival of Dan Ashworth could be exactly what they need to get back on track
Though Mary Earps ' Manchester United goodbye message totaled 370 words, perhaps the biggest factor behind her decision to leave the club can be gleaned from just one: 'Transition'.
That new challenge is set to take Earps to the French capital, where she will become the highest-paid women's goalkeeper in the world for Paris Saint-Germain . It is understood, however, United's offer of a new deal matched Earps' expectations and therefore her decision to leave the club is rooted not in finances but in a desire to be successful on the pitch.
Then there was the Mason Greenwood debacle, which opened a number of female players up to online abuse on the eve of decisive Women's World Cup games. Couple this with the departure of numerous backroom staff, including highly-rated assistant manager Martin Ho and head of women's football Polly Bancroft, and it is easy to see why some players may feel United is, at present, a club in flux.
Cue the emergence of reports citing concern from the Professional Footballers Association and of agents' apparent unwillingness to throw their players into the maelstrom that is Manchester United; a dangerous cocktail of bad news that does not inspire much hope of positive change at the club. With midfielder Grace Clinton set to return to Manchester following a hugely successful loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur and the likes of Gabby George and Hinata Miyazawa expected to play a bigger role following their respective returns to full fitness, the Reds look to have have the makings of a strong squad.
