It follows further criticism of the region's mental health provider
Manchester council has announced major reforms to mental health services amid another damning report into an NHS trust.
The 10 long stay or rehabilitation mental health wards for adults were inspected later in the year 'require improvement', inspectors said. The council says the decision to make the changes to mental health services was taken before the latest inspection reports were published. It comes more than two years after a BBC Panorama programme exposed claims of patients allegedly being abused by GMMH staff at a unit.
"I think it's pertinent that I refer to this also on the back of today's publication of the CQC findings regarding Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust. I want to be clear, we have taken this decision before the CQC findings were published. We still work very well actually now with the new chief executive and the chair of the board in terms of moving forward and this decision has been taken in agreement with them as well.
"This is the best possible news for people who need this service and hopefully the mistakes and the misdirection of the last few years will be turned around. It's not going to be easy, it's going to be a momentous decision and a massive organisational decision.
