Choices made this decade will have impacts 'for thousands of years'
Humanity is on “thin ice” - and it’s now or never to take drastic action to avert climate disaster, a landmark UN report has warned.
IPCC scientists insisted the “window is closing” for climate action with the planet teetering on the edge of a string of “tipping points” which would make catastrophic global warming irreversible. And he said the developed world should be using entirely low-carbon and renewable electricity generation by 2035
The report warned that, beyond that temperature, the risk of "tipping points" like species extinction - including coral reefs - irreversible melting of ice sheets, and sea level rises grew even higher. In Scotland, a report in December by expert advisers the Climate Change Committee warned the country was missing so many of its climate targets they were in danger of becoming “meaningless”.
