Officials say at least 21 have been injured
Police and fire services rushed to the terrace at the Medusa Beach Club in Playa de Palma. As of yesterday evening, the officially declared death toll rose to four.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that a false ceiling might have collapsed. A regional emergency response coordination representative confirmed: "Four people have died and 21 have been injured in the collapse of a building in Cartago Street in Playa de Palma.", reports the Mirror.Emergency responders are continuing their efforts at the scene.
A representative from the regional emergency response coordination centre has confirmed: "We have activated an emergency response as a result of the collapse of the ceiling of a two-storey building in Avenida Cartago in Playa de Palma, where people are trapped. Firefighters and local police are at the scene."
As per the response protocol, the area surrounding the beach club is cordoned off, permitting emergency services to handle the active situation. Although early indications suggested that it was a false ceiling that had given way, it later became apparent that the first floor had sunk onto the ground floor.
