Ministers are seeking to reverse a series of amendments made to the Safety of Rwanda Bill by the House of Lords
made to the Safety of Rwanda Bill by the House of LordsBut a survey of public opinion finds that most people – including a majority of Conservative voters – think the bill should be amended or scrapped altogether, rather than passing in its original form.
A poll by Focaldata commissioned by the think-tank British Future found that all of the major measures are supported by the public. Only 24 per cent of people want the bill to pass unamended, with 34 per cent calling on the Government to accept at least some of the changes proposed by peers and 27 per cent saying the Rwanda policy should be cancelled altogether.
Individual measures backed by a majority of the public include a formal system checking that Rwanda is keeping the promises it has made to treat asylum seekers better, as pledged in a treaty with the UK; forcing ministers to act in accordance with the law at all times; and exempting asylum seekers who have worked for the British military from the deportation scheme.
“Rishi Sunak invoked the ‘will of the people’ to warn the Lords against delaying this Rwanda Bill. But the public backs the amendments proposed by the Lords. Abiding by the law, allowing credible new evidence to be heard in court and fully implementing the Government’s own treaty are seen as common-sense measures.”
