August’s birthstone is often unfairly overshadowed by that other, flashier green stone, the emerald.
Peridot is actually the gem-quality form of the mineral olivine, , but August’s birthstone has a characteristic lime-green hue that really makes a play for. Originally found on an island in the Red Sea, high-quality deposits have recently been uncovered in China, giving rise to a burst of peridot-dotted pieces across the jewellery scene.
Believed to glow in the dark by the early Egyptians, known as the Evening Emerald by the ancient Romans, and adored by King Edward VII, peridots were the height of fashion in the Victorian era, and are believed to dispel nightmares and bring luck. The lime-green hue of the stone may not be for everyone, but don’t be put off, August babies – contemporary jewellers have shown how its acidic tones can be beautifully offset with other stones, particularly diamonds and pearls.
