Escape the UK's chilly winter blues and head to Malaga, Spain for warm temperatures, sunshine, and a city brimming with history, culture, and delicious food.
While the UK continues to shiver in chilly temperatures, many destinations across Europe are enjoying far warmer conditions - and a lot more sunshine. Luckily for us, if you are in need of some winter sun, there are dozens of destinations to choose from with direct flights from Manchester Airport, and they don’t have to break the bank either. You might think of mainland Spain as a summer destination, with the Canary Islands being the go-to holiday choice during the winter months.
Yet many of Spain’s southern cities enjoy mild temperatures even at this time of the year. The coastal city of Malaga can reach highs of 20C in February - far warmer than the 7C we can expect here in Manchester. Located on the famous Costa del Sol, it enjoys plenty of sunshine too. It can still get chilly in the evening so it’s a good idea to pack a jacket, but it’s not that much different to a summer’s day here in the UK, so you can’t complain about that when it’s the middle of winter. Skyscanner shows flights from Manchester Airport to Malaga in February starting from as little as £15 one way, with returns available for a similar price (although this doesn’t include seat allocation or baggage). Malaga has an impressive 16 beaches, the most popular being La Malagueta, La Misericordia, El Palo or Pedregalejo. Water temperatures can still be a bit nippy in February, so you may want to give swimming a miss, yet this city has so much else to offer making it the perfect winter sun city break. The city is rich in history and culture. Admire the Moorish fortress of Alczaba, which dates back to the 11th century and features beautiful courtyards, gardens and terraces. At the foot of the fortress lies Malaga’s Roman theatre, which was discovered in 1951 having been buried underground for centuries. It was used up until the third century AD, but Moorish settlers used some of the structure to build the fortress. If you’re feeling up to it, climb up to Castillo de Gibralfaro, which is perched high above the city and offers amazing views of Malaga. It dates back to the 14th century and also houses a military museum. Malaga is the birthplace of one of the world’s most famous painters, Pablo Picasso, and art fans will delight at a visit to the Picasso museum, which contains more than 200 pieces from across most of his career. Of course, no visit to Spain is complete without sampling tapas, and the region of Andalusia offers some of the best tapas, with a strong emphasis on seafood.
