Organisers say mass tourism does not generate wealth or welfare for most of the population
Mallorca“We used to go out in the morning for a summer swim, now due to overcrowding we just don’t bother,” says Marga Mas Gomila, a Catalan teacher and native Mallorcan.
Estefanía Durán, a Mallorcan-born millennial, considers herself an “agitator” rather than affiliated with any group. “I don’t think anyone should point the finger directly at tourists,” she says, “we all have the right to travel and enjoy wherever we go. The problem is that we are islands and as such resources are limited.
“We need concrete measures to change the course of an economic system dependent on mass tourism that for years does not generate wealth or welfare for most of the population – on the contrary.”
