Zoe Ball, 52, is the BBC 's highest-paid woman and about to front new ITV show, Mamma Mia: I Have A Dream, but admits even after 30 years in the business she sometimes feels 'not good enough'.
She is one of Britain's most experienced broadcasters, not to mention the BBC's highest-paid woman. But if you were to ask Zoe Ball if she is good enough, her response might rather surprise you.
'You need to be able to be a little bit critical with yourself, give yourself a hard time, you've got to be self-aware because otherwise you're going to get lost in showbusiness, and no one wants that. Ms Ball – daughter of children's TV legend Johnny Ball – catapulted to fame in the 1990s as one of the newly founded 'ladettes' although she insists it was 'just a word' and that she has 'grown up a bit, though hopefully not too much'.
She plays down the fact it's an ITV show, saying: 'It didn't feel strange. It's not about where you're working, it's the project.' They are, says Ms Ball, similar ages to her son Woody, 23. She admits she's a bit disappointed that none of the contestants hooked up, but concedes: 'It is not like Love Island.'
Ms Ball was dressed in a striking hot pink trouser suit the day I interviewed her at the five-star hotel where she is staying with the ITV show's director Judy Craymer and judges Alan Carr, Jessie Ware, Samantha Barks and US star Amber Riley. But she fears the ensemble makes her look like Peppa Pig.
