Callum Duncan denies causing death by dangerous driving, claiming he was 'curious' about stolen bikes, while prosecutors argue his pursuit was reckless.
Callum Duncan, a 28-year-old man from Reddish, Stockport, is on trial accused of causing the death of 16-year-old Dean Barnes in a car crash on January 24, 2023. The prosecution alleges that Duncan gave chase in his car after three burglars stole three motorbikes from his shed, one of which was being ridden by Dean Barnes. Duncan claims he was simply 'curious' to see where the burglars were going with his property.
The court has heard evidence that Dean Barnes was a passenger on the stolen Husqvarna motorbike driven by Adam Norman, 36. Norman, along with Alexander Riley, 21, admitted to the burglary, and the jury has been informed there is 'no room for doubt' that Dean Barnes was also involved in the theft. Duncan denies causing death by dangerous driving, stating he did not intend to harm anyone, but the prosecution argues his actions were reckless and led to the tragic accident.According to prosecutors, Duncan was driving at speeds of up to 36mph in a 20mph zone and 'bouncing' over speed bumps during the pursuit. The court heard he was at times 'one second' behind Norman's bike. When the burglars attempted to turn onto Ainsdale Grove, a residential road, Norman attempted to ride across two lanes of traffic, while Duncan slowed down due to the busy main road, claiming he didn't try to 'ram' the bike. However, the prosecution contends that Duncan's aggressive driving contributed to the fatal collision.Duncan stated he didn't witness the crash, but overheard a 'bang' and was shaken by the incident. He admits to taking the stolen Husqvarna from the scene and delivering it to his mother's house, assuming Norman was unharmed. It was only four hours later that Duncan, according to his testimony, called the police and confessed to his involvement, stating, 'I had no choice but to ring the police.' The trial continues, with both Duncan and Norman maintaining their innocence in causing death by dangerous driving. The Court will now consider all the evidence presented and determine the fate of both defendants
