The man who King County prosecutors believe is responsible for murdering a homeless man with an axe pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday.

Liam Kryger, 25, is charged with first-degree murder after the victim, Daravuth Van, wasAccording to court filings, Van wasto the Town Hall Seattle event center when Kryger attacked him. Neighbors said Van was homeless and had been staying in the area for a while.

Investigators were doing surveillance in the area and spotted someone matching the suspect's description walking through the area "with a dark tubular object hanging down his side." Police circulated the suspect's photos through a law enforcement bulletin and an officer recognized Kryger, according to the report.

In a 2019 court hearing, Kryger's family said that he had threatened to kill his parents with a kitchen knife and threatened to cut off his mother's hands, according to court records.
