A man accused of driving a vulnerable young mum to suicide with a campaign of domestic abuse admitted being 'heavy handed' when he restrained her during arguments. Ryan Wellings, 30, admitted causing an injury to Kiena Dawes during a row but said he was 'gutted my pregnant missus got a black eye.' Wellings is on trial for manslaughter after Kiena, 23, took her own life in July 2022. He also denies ABH and controlling and coercive behaviour.
Speaking from the witness box at Preston Crown Court, Wellings agreed the relationship between himself and Kiena was ‘volatile’ with frequent arguments. He said they lived a ‘party lifestyle’ before Kiena fell pregnant with their baby daughter in February 2021. The couple would frequently argue about Wellings’ cocaine use and his relationship with his ex Kayleigh Anderson. When Kiena threw him out of their flat in Fleetwood he would return to Ms Andersons and take drugs, he told the jury. During a row in July 2021, when Kiena was seven months pregnant, Wellings said she scratched him with her acrylic nails when he threatened to throw her dad’s aftershave out of the window. He said as he pushed Kiena away from him ‘the palm of my hand hit her on the top of her head, causing a black eye to her eyelid’. A few months later the couple took a holiday in the Lake District, but while they were away Kiena discovered Wellings had been searching online for escorts. In a mobile phone message, Kiena said: “You f**king b*******s push someone till they are hanging till the end and when they break tell them to calm down and stop.” Wellings said he felt ‘stupid’ for looking at escorts but told the jury he had never cheated on Kiena. John Jones KC, defending, took the jury through a number of text messages which showed ‘swings’ in the relationship, with frequent arguments and affection.
