He put on a fake accent during the call and pretended to be called ‘Antonio’.
Leslie Gray, 54, got into trouble with police after threatening violence in February when he thought the worker had made off with his friend’s wallet that contained £1,000.Prosecutor Alec Burns told Newcastle Crown Court: ‘He immediately said he would come around there and beat them.‘He demanded they take no more booking as escorts until some money he said was stolen was paid back, or there would be violence.
‘He said if he found out they were working, there would be a knock on the door and five men would come in, smash their faces in and steal some of their property.’The court heard the escort worker was frightened by what was said during the call, which she recorded, and alerted the police.Gray made a second call when the victim was with a police officer and his true identity was traced from the number he used.
Tony Cornberg, defending, said the owner of the wallet, which was later returned empty, did not want his wife to know it had been stolen and had not wanted to involve the police.Gray, from Gateshead, admitted sending malicious communication.Judge Sarah Mallett sentenced Gray to ten months imprisonment, suspended for two years, with rehabilitation requirements and a six-month electronic curfew.
The judge told him: ‘You made appalling threats, using a false name and demanding the return of money you knew they had no responsibility for taking. ‘You made threats that could be interpreted as threats to rape, made references to groups of males and said if any girls who worked as escorts took any further work their homes would be visited, property would be stolen or their faces broken.’
