A man has been charged over an alleged act of animal cruelty in Sydney after he allegedly tried to take an ibis home by shoving it into a trolley bag. 9News

A 60-year-old man was arrested and charged with two counts of harming or attempting to harm a protected animal and committing an act of animal cruelty at 9:30pm on Friday.

Witnesses say they saw the man tie a rope around an ibis' neck and feet in Eastwood, before trying to put the bird into a wheeled trolley bag on Tuesday this week.The man was stopped by locals who took the bird from him and set it free.The White Australian Ibis, colloquially known as the "bin-chicken", is a protected species in New South Wales.to receive our daily newsletters and breaking news alerts, sent straight to your inbox.
