A man was injured after being pushed off his bicycle and assaulted in Whalley Range on Thursday evening. The suspect then threatened other members of the public with a knife before damaging a police vehicle. A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

A man sustained injuries after being pushed off his bike and assaulted in Whalley Range on Thursday evening (January 23). Police responded to reports of a disturbance on Burford Road around 7:30 pm. Investigations indicate that a man pushed the victim from his bicycle before launching an attack. It is believed that the suspect then displayed a knife while making threats against other members of the public. Upon arrival, officers encountered the suspect who proceeded to damage a police vehicle.

A 20-year-old male was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. The residential street was secured with a cordon while officers conducted their investigation. The cyclist, also a 20-year-old male, received medical attention and was transported to a hospital. His injuries are not considered life-threatening or life-altering. Superintendent Phil Spurgeon commented, “We are aware of the concern this incident will cause in the surrounding areas and throughout Manchester as we received numerous reports from members of the public alerting us to this event. A cordon remains in place on Buford Road while officers conduct their inquiries, and we urge anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses any footage, whether from dashcams or mobile phones, to come forward and speak to us on 101, referencing log 3088 of 23/1/25.
