The federal MP has been at the centre of an AFP investigation and police have confirmed a man has been charged for making threats against a senator.
Independent Victorian Senator Lidia Thorpe has identified herself as the federal MP who was threatened with violence in an online video, after the Australian Federal Police said they had charged a Melbourne man for his alleged role in creating and sharing the video.
Victorian Senator Lidia Thorpe is experiencing significant complications as a result of a car accident.A spokesman for Thorpe confirmed in a written statement issued by her office on Friday night that she was the MP referred to in the AFP statement. “The senator is experiencing significant complications as a result of the accident and is undergoing medical treatment.”
The AFP said it launched an investigation in January 2022 after it received a complaint from a senator about the video allegedly shared by the man. During a search at the man’s home in the Melbourne suburb of Mernda in June last year, police seized three electronic devices which they will allege in court contained evidence of the man’s involvement in the production and distribution of the video.
