Manchester City news as Premier League APT case comes to a conclusion that leaves both sides claiming a win

Despite Manchester City's bid to prove Premier League associated party transaction rules proving to be successful, neither side has come out on top in the first of two serious legal battles this season. After an announcement on Monday that current and original regulations were unlawful, the panel's decision leaves things up in the air once more.

This all comes after City complained that current rules regarding how sides are allowed to agree sponsorship deals were unlawful. After Newcastle's Saudi Arabian-backed takeover, these regulations were tightened in an attempt stop inflated agreements being passed, handing an advantage to those with effective nation-state ownership.

“One of the lines to emerge from the decision was that shareholder loans to clubs that had been done on favourable terms far better than could be achieved in normal market conditions were deemed anti-competitive and non-compliant with fair market value, something which was a key part of City’s defence.

“For those clubs in receipt of sizeable shareholder loans, including the likes of Arsenal at some £250m, they will want some clarity soon around how this is impactful moving forward, if at all." What of City's other rivals in this case, though? “The Premier League, currently embroiled in a legal battle with Manchester City over the 115 charges in relation to alleged historical breaches of financial controls, a separate case to the APT tribunal, is risking a potential civil war breaking out as it scrambles to prove that it can regulate itself effectively," Powell says, analysing how the trial now looks in regard to APT outcome.

"It might be that the Premier League simply tightens up aspects of its legislation for clarity for clubs as opposed to it creating huge fractures across the 20 member clubs. Both sides have trumpeted victory in this APT case.
