A lifelong Manchester City fan has been banned from all football games for three years after he was found guilty of using offensive and abusive language towards Liverpool supporters during a Premier League match.
A lifelong Manchester City supporter has been prohibited from attending all football matches for a period of three years due to his involvement in ' tragedy chanting ' directed at Liverpool fans during a Premier League fixture at Anfield .
Stephen Tierney, a 47-year-old valve factory worker, was apprehended by security personnel after he heckled opposing fans with chants of 'murdering b******s,' which were perceived as a reference to the 1985 Heysel Stadium disaster that tragically resulted in 39 fatalities. Upon being escorted out of the 60,000-strong crowd on December 1st of the previous year, Tierney, a City season ticket holder for 30 years with attendance at 800 matches, immediately expressed remorse and pleaded, 'I have been an idiot. Please do not ban me.'During his court appearance, Tierney stated, 'I have never been in this situation before. I am shaking like a leaf. Football has been my life since I was a child. It is all I have ever known. I will be devastated if I am banned.' It was revealed that he had consumed six pints of alcohol prior to the incident. At Sefton magistrates court, Tierney, residing in West Green, Middleton, Manchester, admitted to engaging in abusive behavior and was issued a Football Banning Order. He was also granted a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £115 in costs.Angela Conlan, representing the prosecution, provided details of the incident, stating, 'This incident occurred during a Liverpool and Man City game. Stewards were present at approximately 3:50 pm. Witnesses observed the defendant and noted his location at the match. They heard him shouting 'murdering b******s.' He directed these shouts towards a group of Liverpool fans. He was promptly escorted to additional security personnel. Upon being removed from the stadium, he immediately expressed regret, saying 'I have been an idiot. Please do not ban me.' There are no previous convictions.' Representing himself, Tierney delivered a prepared statement, expressing his sincere apologies for his actions. He acknowledged that he had consumed excessive alcohol on the day and stated, 'I know I said something stupid, something I deeply regret.' He emphasized that his behavior was entirely out of character, asserting, 'It is clearly out of character for me. I have never been in trouble with the police before in my life. I have been all over the country, all over Europe. I have been to about 800 games. I have had a season ticket for over 30 years and I have never been in trouble with police, stewards or fans.' He expressed his fear of losing his job and the devastating impact a football ban would have on his life. The judge, however, emphasized the need for a deterrent to prevent similar incidents in the future, stating, 'I have to make a football banning order unless there is a really really good reason not to. But normally for people who behave like you did, there has got to be a deterrent to stop this kind of thing happening.
