Manchester City beat Man United on penalties in the Community Shield on an afternoon that offered promise
The need to replace Julian Alvarez and provide cover for Rodri means that they will remain active in the transfer window until the end of it, but in the meantime there are opportunities for those already in the squad. When the wheels started to come off for City after a typically strong start against a side they are used to outplaying, he did not hide his anger - either at the players or the water bottle that took a whack as the sides headed in goalless at half-time.
It looked like another inevitable defeat when Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench and went past Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias too easily before finding the net. Mind you, it also looked like Bernardo Silva's brief cameo was complete with a completely unnecessary barging over of Garnacho.
