Reach PLC's very own football finance expert Dave Powell has explained what impact a legal 'win' for Manchester City will have over the Premier League.

Manchester City have reportedly secured a 'potentially significant win' in one of its legal battles with the Premier League - and Dave Powell has explained exactly what that means. In February 2023, the English top-flight charged its champions with 130 alleged breaches of financial regulations - aka Financial Fair Play .

Now, according to The Times, the club's separate fight, relating to Associated Party Transaction rules , has resulted in a City 'win'. APT rules are designed to limit how much associated parties can pay clubs in sponsorship, and it must be stressed that this matter is separate to the 130 charges case.

He said: "While the mention of Manchester City and legal challenges is likely to whip-up plenty of interest, there remains no decision communicated on any rule change by the Premier League, with the rules remaining the same on the league's website and no sign of any alterations to clauses. The football finance expert added: "The rules have only been in situ since the Premier League and its member clubs reacted to the Newcastle United takeover by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund , with other clubs having raised concerns immediately due to fears of improving the ability to invest on the playing side through inflating revenues by entering into deals with associated companies, in the case of the PIF, wealthy firms in the Gulf with whom the PIF were closely linked.
