Manchester City have been linked to promising Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite but have ample strength already at centre-back
Manchester City have not been moved by the prospect of signing Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite this summer.
Branthwaite, 22, impressed for Everton last season as Sean Dyche's team preserved their Premier League status despite points deductions for failing Premier League financial rules. The centre-back was called up to the England squad in March but did not make the final cut for the Euros. Everton were open to selling Branthwaite earlier this summer as they sought to avoid further Premier League sanctions but were determined to hold out for a fair price and rejected a £43m offer from Manchester United that they felt was well below their valuation. United are yet to return with a second offer and Everton's need to sell has reduced after the passing of the PSR deadline.
Despite links to the player, City are not currently interested in testing Everton's resolve over Branthwaite as they prioritise other areas of the pitch; cover for Rodri is needed while Brazilian winger Savio will add to the attack. While the Everton defender has shown why he could suit City's play, Pep Guardiola already has five world-class centre-backs at his disposal.
Josko Gvardiol was signed for £77.5m last summer to improve on the team that won the Treble, but as he increased competition for the remaining defenders he also took the place in the squad of Aymeric Laporte as the Spanish defender left for Al Nassr. There are no signs of Gvardiol, John Stones, Ruben Dias, Manu Akanji or Nathan Ake moving on, leaving no room for Branthwaite.
