A man has died after allegedly smashing into his former partner's property and setting fire to her newly purchased home.

Emergency services were called to the property on Rhodes Parade at about 4:50am after reports a man had smashed the window of the home.

The 65-year-old man is under suspicions for allegedly setting the fire inside his former partner's home.Despite the quick response, the double storey home had significant fire damage. Picture: Nine News While the woman is understood to have escaped the blaze without any injuries, the man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.Fire Rescue Victoria Commander Craig Williams said that despite firefighters containing the fire within 20 minutes, it caused"significant" damage.

"FRV crews were on scene quickly and this was an extensive fire, it took some time to extinguish... bringing significant damage," he told Nine News.Anyone who witnessed the incident or with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
