A 28-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, West Midlands Police say.
West Midlands Police said it was called at 22:30 BST to the collision on the A38 Sutton Coldfield Bypass.
The 28-year-old driver of the black BMW 140i car was pronounced dead at the scene while a 19-year-old passenger from the vehicle was taken to hospital. The force said the driver of the lorry was assisting with its inquiries and appealed for anyone with information about the collision to come forward. Det Sgt Paul Hughes said: "Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the man who has died and we have a family liaison officer in place to support them."
