George Cannon, a 24-year-old chartered accountant, made the selfless decision to donate his kidney to a little girl in need. Moved by a social media post about kidney donation, he waited five years before taking action and helping a stranger. After the surgery, George was overwhelmed with gratitude when he received heartfelt thank-you cards from both the recipient and her parents.
A 24-year-old who was 'ready to die' for a stranger by donating his kidney to a little girl was blown away when he received a letter in the post. George Cannon, who is studying to be a chartered accountant, came across a post on social media when he was 18 about someone who had donated a kidney and thought it was 'really nice'. The idea 'stuck with' him and by September 2023, having just turned 23, he found himself on the operating table.
Despite some discomfort after the procedure and medication that 'didn’t sit well' with him, he now feels as fit and healthy as ever, exercising five times a week. In April 2024, George received two cards – one from the 'little girl' who received his left kidney, and another from her parents saying 'thank you, we’ve got our little girl back'. He said if he can convince one person to donate 'it would make it all even more worth it'. Speaking to PA Real Life, George, from Ramsgate, in Kent, said: 'It was just the idea of helping someone that much. A lot of these people haven’t done it to themselves – my kidney went to a little girl who’s done nothing at all wrong. 'It’s not a risk-free surgery because none of them are, and I was ready to go into that for someone I’d never met – that puts a lot of things into perspective and does build confidence. A lot of people go through life only thinking about themselves and being very selfish and, don’t get me wrong I am selfish at times, but it made me think more about other people and not just about myself.' The altruistic journey began for George when he was just 18 after a social media post from a kidney donor caught his attention. The idea lingered with him as he periodically revisited the thought, researching on occasion until, by December 2022, George decided he would take serious steps.
