Graham Crowley won the John Moores Painting Prize on his 10th attempt
A man said he told his wife it was the last time he would ever enter a prestigious art competition before he won it just hours later.
In his speech after he was announced winner, Graham, 73, spoke of the "tension" he felt in his previous attempts, and said that before the ceremony he told his wife that "whatever the outcome" this would the "last one" and he wouldn't enter again. In his speech, Graham told those in attendance: "Although I've done lots of stuff ... I'll be honest with you it is this moment that matters more than anything else.
Speaking to the ECHO after the ceremony, he said: "It's the best painting I've ever painted. There is some justice to this, I've been shortlisted three times. I thought I'd sent in a pretty good painting the first time, a pretty good painting the second time.
