A man who was accused of trying to steal the Magna Carta from Salisbury Cathedral has been found guilty
His comments included:"You can't talk to me about the holy grail so to speak, if you find a bag on the floor which says cocaine on it, you would have to test that bag forensically, as for your holy grail, you would need a carbon test and a trace element test.
Mr Parkes requested that a pre-sentence report is completed on Royden, saying:"The reality is that it's overwhelmingly likely that Mr Royden is going to an immediate sentence of custody.Royden was remanded in custody until he can be sentenced on 25 February. He has 23 previous convictions spread over 51 offences, including theft and criminal damage, the court was told.
It also heard that he suffered brain damage in 1991 as a result of a car accident, and is aided by a carer. He is also subject to a court protection order regarding his finances. The copy that Royden attempted to steal was placed back on display three months later, and the damaged case was made part of the exhibition, being deemed as part of the document's history.
