A man remains clinging to life in hospital after being found with critical injuries on a Hobart street overnight on Friday.

Tasmania n Detective Inspector David Gill said the man, aged in his 50s, had significant injuries to his body when he was discovered early on Friday morning.

Police undertook a range of investigative efforts to get to the bottom of what happened to the man, including extensive door-knocking and collecting CCTV. “At this stage, police believe the man was on the roadway of Swanston Street when he was struck by a 4WD vehicle," Detective Inspector Gill said.
