Man in court after 'trying to kill cop by running him over in bungled car theft'
A MAN accused of trying to kill a police officer by running him over in a bungled car theft has faced court today.
The veteran officer was rushed to hospital with life-changing injuries including a smashed pelvis and remains in intensive care following emergency surgery over the weekend.Today, the 29-year-old appeared in the dock of Birmingham Magistrates' Court flanked by security officers- charged with the attempted murder of PC Phillips.
The car thefts relate to the Range Rover Sport taken on Saturday and another Range Rover stolen in Birmingham the previous day.A second man, 24-year-old Ahsan Ghafoor, of no fixed address, has been charged with the same two car thefts, plus dangerous driving and other motoring offences. In a statement today, PC Phillips’ family said: "We are grateful for all the messages of support that we’ve had from the police and members of the public."What happened on Saturday demonstrates the dangers that officers face every day.
