Christopher Brookes, 42, from Oakengates in Shropshire, was sentenced to a suspended prison term for making fraudulent claims for children's school transport and using the funds for personal expenses.
A man from Shropshire, England, has been sentenced to a suspended prison term for defrauding the public purse of over £9,500 through false claims for children's school transport . Christopher Brookes, 42, of Oakengates, submitted fraudulent claims to Telford and Wrekin Council, receiving funds that he subsequently used for personal expenses, including online gambling. An investigation by the council revealed Brookes's deception.
On 3 February, at Telford Magistrates' Court, Brookes was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 24 months. He was also ordered to repay the full amount of the fraudulent claims, along with a victim surcharge, totaling £10,967.20. Brookes had previously pleaded guilty to fraud. The council had invited Brookes for a voluntary interview at their offices, but he failed to attend. Councillor Richard Overton, the deputy leader of the council, stated that this conviction highlights the importance of honesty and integrity when dealing with public funds. He emphasized the council's commitment to combating fraud and safeguarding public resources for the benefit of the community. Overton added that the council's investigations team will continue to take decisive action against individuals who attempt to exploit public services for personal gain.
