A Nottinghamshire man, Armelind Pupla, has been sentenced to four months in jail, suspended for a year, for using a fake driving licence to apply for settlement in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme. Pupla, 27, used a different man's name and a selfie photograph on the fake licence, which raised suspicion at the Home Office. An investigation led to the discovery of a UK driving licence and bank card in the name of a different Cypriot man at Pupla's home. The prosecutor argued that Pupla's actions crossed the custodial threshold, while his defence attorney highlighted his good character, efforts to become a lawful citizen, and contributions to his family and community.

A Nottinghamshire man used a fake driving licence to apply to settle in the UK. Nottingham Crown Court heard how Albanian national Armelind Pupla used the licence when he put in an application under the Government's EU Settlement Scheme.

“The enemy in the room is not whether it crosses the custodial threshold but whether it must be immediate. This is a good man who presents a low risk of reoffending. “Not only does he work the hours he works but he supports his wife's education, she is trying to become a dentist and it is well documented that we need dentists here in the UK. It is his financial contribution that pays for that. He is training to be a plumber and he attends college.
